Construction of a photochemical reactor combining a CCD spectrophotometer and a LED radiation source.

An inexpensive photoreactor using LED light sources and a fibre-optic CCD spectrophotometer as a detector was built by designing a special cell holder for standard 1.000 cm cuvettes. The use of this device was demonstrated by studying the aqueous photochemical reaction of 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone. The developed method combines the highly quantitative data collection of CCD spectrophotomete...

Applications of free-electron lasers in the biological and material sciences.

Free-Electron Lasers (FELs) collectively operate from the terahertz through the ultraviolet range and via intracavity Compton backscattering into the X-ray and gamma-ray regimes. FELs are continuously tunable and can provide optical powers, pulse structures and polarizations that are not matched by conventional lasers. Representative research in the biological and biomedical sciences and conden...

Photochemistry of aldehyde clusters: cross-molecular versus unimolecular reaction dynamics.

The unimolecular photochemistry of aldehydes has been extensively studied, both experimentally and computationally. However, less is known about the role of cross-molecular photochemical processes in the condensed-phase photolysis of aldehydes. The triplet-state photochemistry of pentanal in its pentameric (n = 5) cluster was investigated as a model for photochemical reactions of aliphatic alde...

A Miniaturized CPW-Fed Tapered Slot Antenna in Lossy Environment for UWB Application in Breast Cancer Detection

In this paper, a miniaturized coplanar waveguide fed (CPW-fed) tapered slot antenna (TSA) is introduced for breast cancer detection. Here, a modified CPW to slot-line transition structure with an air-bridge is employed to broaden the transition bandwidth and increase the radiation efficiency. Through these applied modifications, negative features of the original TSA (limitation of transition) a...
